Mataiki Library Visit

Hello,

My class visited the new building that was built across from school! There were many facilities for the community including a new library, 5 swimming pools, a computer room, sew and embroidery machines, 3d printers, and more.

When we went over, we only looked at the library. I sat down at one of the tables with my friends and looked at magazines of famous people and models. I enjoyed looking at the magazines because I recognized my favorite sports player. I am excited and hope to use the other facilities in the future.

Chicken Leg Dissection

Hello,

Last week we did a dissection on a chicken leg. The dissection aimed to understand what bones and muscles looked like and their functions.

Method:

1. We first removed the chicken skin by pulling it and cutting the rest with scissors.

2. Then we cut carefully into the leg separating the tendons from the muscles and bones.

3. After taking a good look at the tendons, we cut the rest of the muscles to look further into the bones including the fibula.

4. Lastly, we snapped the knee looking at all the cartilage and ligaments that had joined the femur and tibia together.

Results:

We didn’t take photos but we followed these pictures:

Discussion:

What is the function of tendons?

Tendons are soft tissue fibers that pull the muscles to move bones.

I noticed that the bones looked very similar to human legs especially because they have the same names and functions.

classifying life

Hello,

In science class, we have been learning about classifying living things into different categories that are more specific. The categories start off as kingdom, then phylum, then class, order, family, genus, and the most specific is species. The broadest category is Kingdom and five types of living things fall into it.  Monera, Protist, Fungi, Plants, and Animals.

Although bacteria are part of the monera kingdom, it is similar to protists because they are both living organisms made of singular cells. However, they are different since bacteria are prokaryotic cells, and protists are eukaryotic cells.

Fungi and plants share similarities like how they are both made of multiple eukaryotic organism cells, can produce seeds, and have similar growth patterns. But, plants are producers in a food chain while fungi are decomposers.

Plants can be similar to animals in multiple ways like how they both are made of various cells, they both grow, they need nutrients, and even though they both move, there is a difference in how they move. Plants move slowly whereas animals move way faster and more frequently, compared to plants.

Endurance

Hello,

In P.E. class, we tested our pulse to see if it fell into the average rate. First, we all sat down and tried to find our pulse by putting two fingers against our neck or wrist. Then for 15 seconds, we counted how many beats there were and multiplied it by 4 to fill in for the minute we were supposed to count. To count our active pulse, we ran around the gym for six minutes and counted the pulse.

These were my results:

Beats Date
Resting pulse  72 19.3.2024
Active Pulse 120 19.3.2024

Effects of Heat Blog

Hello,

In science, we have been learning about the effects of heat on particles. To understand how particles get affected, we did experiments to demonstrate the motions of particles when heat is added. We did four experiments that showed conduction, convection, diffusion, and contraction.

Each experiment had a different effect:

  • Conduction –  When heat is added to a solid, the particles vibrate and thermal energy is transferred to neighboring particles. in the experiment, conduction is shown by sticking pins with petroleum jelly to a metal rod and heating one side of the rod with a bunsen burner

Year 9 Athletics blog

In P.E. we have been learning and doing various athletic activities to prepare for the upcoming athletics day. We have been practicing the correct technique of performing new events. We have learned about discus and shotput.

I have chosen the event shotput to focus on. I have learned a range of facts and techniques to putt a shotput. firstly, you hold a shotput with three fingers and you have to make sure the ball is tucked so it is touching your neck and jaw. When you put it, your body must

be facing sideways, and bending your knees is ideal for creating more power.

During P.E. when we were doing the events, I showed simple respect that could’ve impacted someone’s hauora. I showed respect by not judging people on their abilities and tried to be understanding by cheering them on, even if they weren’t successful.

It is important to develop resilience because it is the only way you can improve. Having those abilities when experiencing both success and failure helps you achieve your goal.

hauora blog

What is te whare tapa wha?

Te whare tapa wha is a model of all areas of your well-being and hauora. Each side of the te whare tapa wha represents the four sides of Hauora, taha wairua (spiritual), taha tinana (physical), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional), and taha whanau (social).

Te Whare Tapa Whā | Mental Health Awareness Week. 23 - 29 SEPTEMBER 2024

How can you take care of your hauora and others?

Ways you could take care of your and others’ hauora is to carefully take care of each wall of the te whare tap wha, all sides are as important as the others. Your social well-being is all about having support and being able to talk to others. Being a person who is reliable and understanding can also boost someone else’s hauora. Spiritual well-being is not just about religion and beliefs but it’s your purpose in life and how much you value yourself. one way you could help your and others well well-being is to just support them so they feel like they belong. Your physical well-being is something that not only includes having to exercise but it is also what you eat and do to your body. Helping and encouraging others to try and eat healthy could also lead to being refreshed, however, doing too much exercise without rest is not ideal and could ruin this side of your hauora. Mental and emotional well-being is associated with your thoughts and what you think about. Having a growth mindset could help you block out negative thoughts and being positive towards others could also help them get things off their mind.

What does being assertive mean?

Being assertive is the same as being confident and not being afraid or frightened by others. It is also a positive mindset and having the ability to bounce back. Being assertive means being honest and to believe without doubt.

Ice Melt

Hello,

Today in our science class, we conducted an experiment to determine whether ice melts faster on plastic or metal. All we did was placed an ice cube on a plastic lid and another one on a metal tabletop.

One ice cube is placed on a metal block. An identical ice cube is placed ..

I predicted that the ice would melt faster on plastic because the plastic lid was at room temperature while the metal tabletop was cold. However, my prediction turned out to be wrong. The ice cube placed on the metal tabletop melted faster.

The reason for this is that metal absorbs more thermal energy compared to plastic, which makes it melt more easily. So, even though the metal tabletop was colder, it was able to melt the ice faster due to its better heat-absorbing properties.

G.R.I.T

Hello,

What is G.R.I.T. and how is it relevant? G.R.I.T. is an acronym that stands for “give it a go”, “redo if necessary”, “ignore the urge to quit”, and “take the time to do it right”. It refers to both a way of doing things and a mindset. G.R.I.T. encourages everyone to try something, even if unsure of the outcome. If your attempt doesn’t succeed, it suggests that you should try again with a different approach. The rules encourage learners to progress at a pace that ensures proper understanding and improvement and you also learn the valuable skills of resilience and perseverance.
